Reflections from the 6D AI Melbourne CXO Leaders Panel

Recently I had the privilege of joining some of Australia’s most senior technology leaders on stage at the 6D AI Melbourne event. Sharing the panel with executives from the Digital Transformation Agency, St Vincent’s Health Australia, and Toll Group offered a valuable cross-section of how AI is reshaping strategy across government, healthcare, and logistics.

What struck me most was how much the conversation around AI has matured. This wasn’t about vendor hype or the latest breakthrough – it was about the practical realities of driving sustainable AI adoption from the executive level.

Beyond The Hype: The Reality of AI Adoption

A recurring theme across the panel was that AI adoption is advancing, but often in unexpected ways. Instead of sweeping transformations, much of the progress is happening in focused pockets driven by specific teams or highly specialised use cases.

This mirrors what we see in our AI readiness workshops. While leaders naturally lean toward consolidation, diversification can be more valuable – particularly where niche applications deliver real business impact.

At Intelligent Pathways, we call this incremental augmentation: aligning AI adoption with existing roles and processes, and targeting areas where organisations can fail, recover, and learn quickly. This approach builds capability without overextending, while demonstrating value early.

The other panellists reinforced this measured path, sharing examples where gradual, well-scoped implementations delivered more sustainable results than ambitious transformations that struggled to gain traction.

The Accountability Challenge of Agentic AI

When the conversation turned to agentic AI (autonomous systems executing business processes), I emphasised that explainability must be the foundation of accountability. If a decision can’t be explained, it can’t be trusted in enterprise environments.

This sparked strong agreement, particularly from healthcare and government leaders who face high regulatory and safety requirements. We discussed the importance of setting boundaries: defining the scope of autonomy, keeping humans in the loop, and continuously sampling outputs for accuracy.

But accountability goes further than periodic human oversight. True accountability requires strategic integration of human expertise throughout the process. For decision support in the clinical domain, for example, AI might assist with ECG interpretation, but a human clinician always validates the result before action is taken. This hybrid model mitigates risk, sustains professional engagement, and provides a clear line of responsibility.

The paradox, however, is that the more sophisticated AI becomes, the harder it is to explain. When multiple models interact, each performing well on its own, emergent behaviours can produce unexpected or unexplained outcomes. Traditional validation methods are not enough for this new reality.

That’s why accountability must evolve beyond technical explainability. Leaders on the panel argued for a principles-based approach: instead of chasing perfect algorithmic transparency, organisations should measure AI success against clearly defined principles and societal outcomes. This reframes accountability from “can we explain every decision?” to “are outcomes consistently aligned with our values and objectives?”

By embedding explainability, validation loops, and principles-based governance from the start, organisations can treat accountability not as a brake on innovation but as the foundation of sustainable adoption.

Rethinking AI Investment Priorities

Another encouraging trend is how AI investment decisions are shifting. Only a few years ago, AI discussions were largely confined to IT. Today, executives from across the business are actively involved in identifying opportunities.

Three consistent high-value areas stand out:

  • Process pain points where high effort delivers low marginal value. Both logistics and government leaders highlighted supply chain and citizen services as examples.
  • Rule-heavy decision environments that are complex and costly to maintain, such as healthcare protocols and compliance frameworks.
  • AI readiness – where data, governance, and culture support adoption. As one healthcare leader emphasised, readiness often matters more than technical capability.

Overlaying these with a priority-complexity matrix helps identify quick wins while ensuring strategic alignment – an approach that resonated strongly with my fellow panellists.

Australia’s Position in the Global AI Race

When asked where Australia sits on the AI curve, I argued that the pace of global change matters more than any ranking. New capabilities emerge every few months, constantly reshaping what’s possible.

We agreed Australia has clear strengths in innovation, but there’s concern about specialist skills being highly mobile and at risk of absorption into overseas markets. I also highlighted a key observation: some of the most effective AI adopters are not the most technical staff, but domain experts who can clearly articulate the behaviour they expect from AI. Our healthcare panellist reinforced this with examples of clinical specialists achieving remarkable results despite minimal technical backgrounds.

Leadership in an AI Driven World

Perhaps the strongest consensus was that AI strategy is no longer the sole domain of the CIO. Leaders must frame AI in business terms – linking it to citizen outcomes, operational efficiency, or customer experience – if they want to secure trust and alignment.

Successful adoption requires broad partnership: across business functions, with technology partners, and within industry ecosystems. And it requires a focus on governance, explainability, and workforce capability alongside the technology itself.

Embedding accountability into this leadership lens is vital. The organisations that succeed will not simply be those with the most advanced algorithms, but those that deploy them responsibly, with outcomes that are transparent, explainable, and aligned with business and societal values.

The Path Forward

Reflecting on the panel, I was pleased by the maturity of the discussion. These were not leaders chasing every new capability, but executives focused on sustainable, accountable implementation that delivers measurable value.

For me, the takeaway is clear: successful AI adoption is not about racing to every breakthrough. It’s about integrating AI in a way that is explainable, responsible, and aligned with your organisation’s strengths.
